Nachdem sie in die USA ausgewandert waren, gründeten die Berliner Alfred Lion und Frank Wolff 1939 das heute legendäre Label Blue Note Records, das sich ausschließlich auf amerikanische Jazzmusik spezialisierte. Blue Note Records zeichnete sich durch eine einzigartige Aufnahmetechnik aus und entwickelte somit einen charakteristischen Sound und arbeitete mit Musikern wie Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Wayne Shorter, Thelonious Monk und Quincy Jones zusammen. Das Label zeichnete sich auch dadurch aus, dass dort alle Musiker gleich behandelt wurden, unabhängig von ihrer Hautfarbe, und das in einer Zeit, in der Afroamerikaner noch mit Diskriminierung und Ausgrenzung zu kämpfen hatten. Pünktlich zum 80. Geburtstag von Blue Note Records im Jahr 2019 widmet Regisseur Eric Friedler dem Label diesen Dokumentarfilm.
